The Conventional Frame

Global insect biomass is declining at approximately 2.5% per year. This is not a single-species problem — it is occurring across orders: Lepidoptera (butterflies, moths), Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies), and others. The causes are documented: pesticides (particularly neonicotinoids), habitat loss, light pollution, climate change, and land-use intensification.

Conservation efforts focus primarily on pollinators — especially honeybees — because pollination has a calculable economic value (roughly $235-577 billion annually in crop pollination services). This makes the case legible to economists and policymakers. The result: pollinator protection gets funding. Everything else — decomposers, soil builders, food chain base — does not.


The Reframe

Insects are not individual species to be protected. Insects are the INFRASTRUCTURE of terrestrial ecosystems.

Pollination: 75-95% of flowering plants require animal pollination, overwhelmingly by insects. This includes 75% of the world’s food crops. Remove the pollinators and the plants don’t reproduce. The plants don’t reproduce and the food chain above them collapses.

Species counts tell you how many components you have — but a hundred disconnected components are not a functioning system.
