During those three days: no teacher. No structure. No meals (if the school was where he ate). No social contact with the peers who constitute his entire world. No adult supervision. No channel for whatever produced the chair-throwing in the first place. The thing that was building inside him — the pressure at home, the learning disability nobody has diagnosed, the boredom of a curriculum that has nothing to do with his life — is still building. Now it is building without any of the channels the school provided, however inadequately.
He returns on day four. The pressure is higher. The channels are the same. The chair goes further next time.
The system designed to correct behavior has amplified it. Not through negligence — through physics. You cannot seal a pressurized channel and expect the pressure to decrease.
School suspension — removing a student from the educational environment for a defined period in response to behavioral violations — is the most common disciplinary tool in American schools. Approximately 2.5 million students are suspended annually. Black students are suspended at 3-4 times the rate of white students for the same behaviors.
The evidence against suspension’s effectiveness is extensive. Suspended students are more likely to be suspended again, more likely to be held back a grade, more likely to drop out, and more likely to enter the juvenile justice system. The intervention designed to correct behavior predicts worse behavior. This is not disputed — the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, and the US Department of Education have all recommended reducing exclusionary discipline.
Alternative approaches exist: restorative justice, in-school suspension with support services, positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS). These work when implemented well. They are implemented in a minority of schools.
The behavior IS the decompression.
The student whose shape is being compressed — by a chaotic home, by an undiagnosed disability, by a curriculum that doesn’t fit, by social exclusion, by hunger, by any of the dozens of compressions that converge on a child with no advocate — has remainder accumulating with no sanctioned channel. The outburst is uncontrolled decompression. It is structurally identical to what happens when any compressed system has no valve: the container fails and the contents exit explosively, uncalibrated, hitting everything nearby.
Suspension closes the last remaining channels. The school — however imperfect — provided structure (a schedule, a rhythm, a predictable environment), social contact (peers, at least some adults who see the student daily), and basic needs (meals, warmth, safety from whatever is happening outside the school). Suspension removes all of these. It takes a student whose pressure has no channel and removes the few channels that existed.
The hydraulic prediction is specific: suspension will INCREASE the pressure and therefore INCREASE the behavior it is designed to reduce. This is not a theory — it is what the data shows. The recidivism rate for suspension confirms the hydraulic model. The intervention amplifies the condition it targets.
The reframe produces a different diagnostic question. Not “what did the student do?” but “what compression is producing this remainder, and what channel could carry it without disruption?” The chair-throw is the symptom. The compression is the diagnosis. And the treatment is a CHANNEL — not the removal of the few channels that remain.

Which channels does suspension remove? What channel could replace the suspension — something that addresses the pressure while keeping the existing channels open? The answer will often be specific and implementable: a restorative conversation, an in-school alternative, a connection to a counselor, a diagnostic assessment for the learning disability nobody has checked for.

The circle starts with a child under pressure. The pressure may come from home — chaos, violence, neglect, instability. It may come from an undiagnosed disability that makes the curriculum incomprehensible. It may come from hunger, from social exclusion, from the accumulated weight of being seen as a problem rather than as a person. The pressure has no sanctioned channel. The school offers no valve. The child does not have the developmental capacity to articulate what is building inside them. So the remainder exits through the only opening available: disruptive behavior. A thrown chair. A shouted expletive. A refusal to comply.
The system responds with channel closure. Suspension removes the child from the school — from the structure of a daily schedule, from meals that may be their only reliable food source, from the few adults who see them every day, from the peers who constitute their social world. The pressure that produced the outburst is not addressed. It is not even identified. The suspension targets the behavior — the symptom — and removes the few remaining channels through which the pressure had any outlet at all. The child sits at home for three days, or five, or ten, with the same pressure and fewer channels. The hydraulic prediction is exact: the pressure will find the next weakest point. The behavior will escalate.
The child returns. The school sees a student whose behavior has worsened. The logical response, within the system’s frame, is a longer suspension. The longer suspension removes the channels for a longer period. The pressure builds higher. The cycle tightens: each suspension produces a more pressurized child who produces a more severe behavior that produces a longer suspension. The endpoint, if the circle is not broken, is expulsion — the permanent closure of the school channel — followed, with documented statistical regularity, by the juvenile justice system, which is permanent channel closure of a different kind.
What breaks the circle is providing a channel for the pressure rather than closing the few that remain. This is what restorative justice does: it creates a structured space where the pressure can be named, where the behavior can be understood as a signal rather than punished as a violation, and where the child’s remaining channels are preserved. The intervention is not soft. It is hydraulic. A pressurized system needs a valve, not a seal. Every engineer knows this. The education system, which seals pressurized children and then expresses surprise when the container fails, has not yet learned it.
