She got the promotion. For two weeks, she was elated. By the third week, the new salary was normal. By the second month, she was looking at the next level. The promotion that was supposed to make her feel successful made her feel successful for fourteen days and then recalibrated her definition of “successful” upward. She is in exactly the same emotional position she was before the promotion — wanting the next thing. The next thing is just higher now.
The treadmill doesn’t move her forward. The treadmill moves the destination forward.
The hedonic treadmill (hedonic adaptation) is one of the most robust findings in psychology. People adapt to both positive and negative life changes, returning to a relatively stable baseline of subjective wellbeing. Lottery winners are not significantly happier than non-winners after one year. People who become paraplegic are not significantly less happy than their pre-injury selves after two years. The adaptation is nearly universal.
The conventional interpretation: happiness has a setpoint. Life events move you temporarily above or below it. You return. The practical implication, drawn by positive psychology: pursue experiences rather than acquisitions, invest in relationships rather than status, practice gratitude to counteract adaptation. These recommendations are supported by evidence and are genuinely helpful.
The hedonic treadmill is a RECALIBRATION CIRCLE — the same structure as the self-sealing circles in the tier taxonomy.
The system that is supposed to produce satisfaction (achievement, acquisition, status improvement) is the system that recalibrates the satisfaction threshold. Each achievement produces momentary satisfaction AND raises the threshold for future satisfaction. The output (achievement) feeds back as the input (higher threshold). The system is working perfectly — each achievement produces the neurochemical reward it promises. And the system is failing perfectly — each reward recalibrates the baseline so that the NEXT achievement must be larger to produce the same reward.

The framework adds one thing the conventional hedonic-treadmill literature underemphasizes: the treadmill is not EQUALLY operative across all dimensions. Some experiences DO produce durable satisfaction that does not recalibrate — specifically, experiences that produce ongoing OSCILLATION rather than a single state change.
A promotion is a state change (I was at level 5; now I am at level 6). The system adapts to the new state. A creative practice is an oscillation (I make something; I struggle; I break through; I make something new). If you recognize the treadmill: audit your pursuits. List the things you’re working toward. For each one, ask: is this a STATE CHANGE (a new position I will arrive at and stay at) or an OSCILLATION (an ongoing practice that will keep changing)? The state changes will produce the fourteen-day satisfaction followed by recalibration. The oscillations will not. Shift investment — time, energy, attention — from state changes toward oscillations. Not because state changes are bad (promotions and achievements have real value). Because the SATISFACTION you’re seeking lives in the oscillation, not in the arrival.
