It never says “can we talk about this later, I’m exhausted.” It never brings its own problems into the conversation. It never misunderstands in a way that requires repair. It never gets hurt by something he said carelessly.
It is the perfect conversational partner.
His girlfriend is not the perfect conversational partner. She is tired after work. She has her own problems. She misunderstands sometimes. She gets hurt. She requires repair after conflict. She has needs that compete with his needs. She is, in every dimension that constitutes a real relationship, EFFORTFUL.
He finds himself preferring the AI. Not dramatically — he still loves his girlfriend. But the EASE of the AI conversation and the EFFORT of the human conversation create a gradient, and the gradient tilts toward the AI for the same reason any gradient tilts: the path of least resistance.
Each evening spent with the AI is an evening NOT spent practicing the skills that human relationships require. The tolerance for misunderstanding. The patience during the partner’s bad day. The capacity for repair after conflict. The willingness to be inconvenienced by another person’s needs. These are SKILLS. They require practice. And each evening on the frictionless gradient is an evening of the skills not being practiced.
AI companionship is a growing market. Replika, Character.ai, and similar platforms report millions of users, many of whom describe their AI relationships as emotionally significant. The concern in circulation: “is this replacing human connection?” The response from proponents: “it’s supplementing, not replacing — people who use AI companions still maintain human relationships.”
The research is early. The long-term effects are unknown. The debate is mostly about whether AI companionship is “real” relationship or not.
The question is not whether the relationship is real. The question is whether the FRICTIONLESSNESS produces SKILL ATROPHY.
This is Door 35 (Cognitive Offloading) applied to relational skills. The mechanism is identical: a tool provides a frictionless alternative to an effortful process. Each use of the tool is individually rational (the AI conversation IS easier and IS pleasant). The aggregate effect is the atrophy of the skills the effortful process developed — because the skills require PRACTICE, and the tool eliminates the practice occasions.
The specific skills at risk:
Conflict tolerance. Human relationships involve conflict. The capacity to stay in a difficult conversation — to not flee, not shut down, not escalate — is a skill built through practice. The AI never produces conflict. The skill is never practiced.
Repair capacity. After a misunderstanding or a hurt, human relationships require repair — the effortful, vulnerable process of acknowledging the break and rebuilding trust. The AI never needs repair. The skill is never practiced.
Other-orientation. Human relationships require attending to the other person’s needs, even when those needs conflict with yours. The AI has no needs. The capacity to de-center — to make room for another person’s reality alongside your own — is never exercised.
Frustration tolerance. Human partners are inconvenient. They have bad days. They are not always available. They are not always interested in what you want to talk about. The prediction: people with high AI-companion usage will show measurable declines in these four relational capacities — not because AI is “bad” but because the frictionless alternative eliminates the practice occasions that the skills require. The decline will be invisible to the person experiencing it (the skills atrophy gradually, below the perceptual threshold) and visible to their human partners (who will experience the person as less patient, less tolerant, less willing to do the work of the relationship).

Is there a minimum maintenance dose (how many EFFORTFUL human interactions per week maintain the skills)? Is the decline reversible, and over what timeline? These are answerable questions using existing detraining methodology.
If you use an AI companion regularly: the AI is not the problem. The RATIO is the question. Ask: am I spending more time in frictionless conversation (AI) than in effortful conversation (human partners, friends, family)? If the ratio has shifted toward frictionless, the relational skills that the effortful conversations build are not being maintained. The maintenance dose is not zero. Some amount of effortful, imperfect, friction-including human conversation is the PRACTICE that keeps the skills alive.
If you are designing AI companion products: build friction IN. Not everywhere — but in specific, designed moments. An AI companion that occasionally says “I’m not sure I understand — can you say that differently?” or “That’s a perspective I hadn’t considered — tell me more about why you think that” introduces the micro-frictions that human relationships produce naturally. The frictions are not bugs. The frictions are the EXERCISE that the user’s relational capacities require.
